We’ve written a lot of blog posts over the years about finding the right wood flooring for your home, from picking the best finish to scoping out the most suitable species of wood.
But this is only half the job.

The reality is - it doesn’t matter how perfect your wood flooring is if it isn’t installed by the right person.
Finding the right flooring contractors to fit or refinish your wood floors is just as important as purchasing the best product, and it isn’t an easy task either.

There are a number of factors that you need to consider when looking for the best flooring contractors and, of course, we advocate for ourselves as being the leading team of flooring experts in the Midlands, but we don’t expect you to just take our word for it.

Here’s what you need to do in order to find the right flooring contractors:

MAKE SURE THE FLOORING CONTRACTORS OR COMPANY ARE LICENSED OR INSURED

When you start your search, the first two things you need to look out for are a license and insurance. Both of these items should act as your filter for finding a reliable and legitimate flooring contractor.

Insurance will protect you if there are any mishaps on the job, or if the contractor damages your property or doesn’t complete the job at all, and a licensed contractor will give you peace of mind that they’re a reputable contractor.

Our team of expert flooring contractors are all licensed and our company, Inner Space Flooring, is insured so you can guarantee that we are a trustworthy and credible business and rest assured that your home is in safe hands when you choose us.

GET AT LEAST THREE QUOTES FROM VARIOUS FLOORING COMPANIES

Just as you would shop around for a new television to ensure that you get the best deal, you should do the same when it comes to looking for a flooring contractor.

You want to make sure that you get the best person for the job but that you’re also getting a fair price so, even if you have a contractor in mind, you should still quote them against a couple of others to compare the cost and make sure that you are not being overcharged.

Asking for a written proposal will not only enable you to conduct a price comparison, but it will also give you an initial feel for the contractor.
How well do they outline the project and scope out the work? How quickly were they able to turn around the estimation? Were they easy to communicate with? Were they professional, polite, etc.?
All of this information will give you a strong idea as to whether they are the right contractor for you before you make a pricey commitment that you can’t go back on.

We always provide thorough and fair quotes to anyone who enquires about our services so that you can ensure you’re getting the best price.

ASK THE FLOORING CONTRACTOR ALL THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

If you really want to put the contractors to the test, then ask them a lot of important questions.

In order for them to give you an accurate quote, they will need to visit the site so they can get a clear idea of how much work is going to be involved.
You should use this visit as an opportunity to quiz the contractors and get a better idea of whether they are the best person for the job.

Put together a list of questions such as:

  • Can they provide you with their recommendations when it comes to wood grain or colour for your home?
  • Do they know what maintenance and care will be involved in?
  • Are there any potential issues that could present a problem during the work, and how will they overcome these challenges?

A true expert will have all the right answers and will have no problem answering all your questions with confidence; they should even ask you some good questions too.

Our team will always visit the site and scope out the work before providing customers with a quote and we are more than happy to answer any questions you have before the work gets done.

READ REVIEWS

We live in a day and age where you can give, and get, instant feedback which is why many of us have become reliant on reviews before making purchasing decisions.

Most businesses will have online reviews either on a platform they have signed up to, like Yell or Trustpilot or on their standard Google reviews page.
A good star average is anything over 4, especially if they have more than 50 reviews, and this will give you a solid indication as to the quality of the contractors work.

If you can’t find any reviews this should be your first red flag as it is easy enough, and usually encouraged by businesses, for customers to leave a review to share their positive experience with other potential customers.

If you are struggling to find any reviews for a particular business, or there are only a handful, then you can try asking them directly if they have any previous clients that you can reach out to (if GDPR allows) for a testimonial. This may not be the best method and should only be used as a last call.

As much as we rely on these online reviews, the best testimonial or referral will always come from someone you trust i.e. a family member, friend, neighbour, someone you know personally whose opinion you value.
Therefore, you should always ask someone you trust if they have a recommendation before seeking advice on the internet.

We’re proud to say that Inner Space Flooring has over 50 five-star reviews on Google and this is growing by the week and that is simply because we make sure we deliver an incomparable service and product with each and every job.

DO SOME FINAL RESEARCH BEFORE CHOOSING YOUR FLOORING CONTRACTOR

Once you have read the reviews, collected all your quotes and have narrowed it down to your top one or two, the final step should always be to do some extra research before you make your decision and commit to a flooring contractor or company.

Do a deeper dive through their website and look at the list of clients they share and their history. have they worked with any reputable people or big companies? How long have they been in the industry? What qualifications or training do they have? Are there any pictures of their work?

These are all questions you could ask when they visit the site and put together their quote, but it never hurts to do your own independent research and see what you can find out for yourself.
This can be particularly important if you require a bespoke floor or specialist service and want to ensure that the contractor has the right expertise in this area to deliver a high-quality finish.

Following this you should be able to make your final decision and know that you have done everything you need to ensure that you get the right team for the job.
